Biological oceanography is the study of ocean ecology. COAS researchers focus on phytoplankton physiology and ecology, aquatic microbial ecology, zooplankton ecology, bio-optics, population-to-ecosystem modeling, and benthic sedimentary ecology of continental shelves and estuaries.
